To Celebrate Asian Heritage Month, SHSM students participated in an immersive forest bathing and nature mandala workshop with Sheniz Janmohamed, a poet, artist-educator, and certified Forest Bathing Guide.

Forest Bathing, or shinrin-yoku, is a Japanese practice of immersing oneself in nature to improve mental and physical health. A mandala (Sanskrit for "circle") is a geometric design representing the universe, sacred spaces, and the path to enlightenment in Hinduism and Buddhism.

During the workshop, students explored sensory observation, reflective journaling, and collaborative mandala creation using natural materials, encouraging them to slow down and engage more deeply with their environment. Students developed a stronger appreciation for mindfulness, wellness, and environmental stewardship while strengthening teamwork and creative thinking skills. The experience connected SHSM learning to mental well-being, sustainability, and community building through meaningful land-based and artistic practices.

Study Skills Workshop

The Guidance Department is hosting a 30‑minute workshop designed to help students build effective study skills for tests and exams. The session is open to students in all grades and is intended as a drop‑in workshop, so students can attend during their lunch or spare period.

📍 Location: Library
 📅 Date: Tuesday, May 19
⏰ Time: First half of each period

The workshop offers practical strategies to support exam preparation and academic success.

YRDSB continues to encourage families to use safe transportation to and from school. We encourage students to use active school travel whenever possible. Active travel refers to any form of human-powered transportation, including walking, cycling, rollerblading, skateboarding, and scootering.

School Property

Students using any transportation device, whether electronic or not-electronic, must dismount before arriving on school property. This includes all sidewalks, pathways, and walkways on school grounds. Please note that the school is not responsible for lost or damaged equipment.

Provincial Regulations

These modes of travel offer many physical, mental, and community benefits. Please visit the Ontario website for a full list of regulations. Every cyclist under 18 must wear a properly fitting bike helmet. Some students may also choose to use electronically assisted devices, such as e‑scooters or e‑bikes. In Ontario, you must be 16 or older to ride an e-scooter or e-bike. When riding e‑scooters or e‑bikes, it is important that students follow all applicable municipal regulations to ensure their safety and the safety of others.

Municipal Regulations

Before riding any device, it is important for students and families to be aware of the regulations set by their local municipality. These may include minimum age requirements for operating electric devices, helmet laws, and other safety guidelines.

Respectful Riding

Pedestrians always have the right of way. Students are expected to ride with caution by slowing down, using a bell when approaching others, and passing on the left. Wearing reflective clothing is encouraged to increase visibility and promote safer travel.

Dear YRDSB Student,

We are reaching out to share a fantastic opportunity for you to represent your peers, get involved with student advocacy and work alongside your student trustees. Nomination applications for the 2026–2027 York Region Presidents’ Council (YRPC) Executive Cabinet and Area Representatives are opening on May 5, 2026!

The York Region Presidents’ Council (YRPC) is the official student senate of the York Region District School Board, with the mission to promote and enhance communication and cooperation, inspire and foster ethical leadership, and collect the voices of secondary school students. The Executive Cabinet is responsible for YRPC operations. It works closely with the Student Trustees to ensure that the student voice effectively represents the diverse student body and is heard and considered in decision-making.

YRPC organizes monthly General Assemblies, where students can provide input on various educational matters (e.g., policy and procedure), share their opinions and concerns, and network and collaborate with other student leaders. You can find more information about the YRPC in Policy and Procedure 672.0, Student Leadership and Student Voice, our constitution, and our Instagram.

Students can express their interest in a YRPC position by completing a nomination form by 6:00 p.m.  on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.  All current Grades 9-11 students (future Grade 10-12 students) will receive an email on Friday, May 22, with information about the candidates and instructions on voting. Elections will occur between Friday, May 29 and Tuesday, June 2 until 6:00 p.m. Results will be announced on Tuesday, June 9.

You can learn more about the elections, timelines and the nomination form on the YRPC website. Please feel free to reach out to yrpc@yrdsb.ca if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

YRPC

UHS Debate Club is excited to launch a school-wide Book Drive in collaboration with USAC! Our goal is to collect gently used books and donate them to Second Life Books, an organization that distributes reading materials to children, youth, and families with limited access to books. This initiative promotes literacy, community involvement, and sustainability by giving books a second life. Donations can be dropped off at the cart in front of the library. The drive will run from May 5th to June 5th, with a goal of collecting 200 to 500 books. We encourage students and families to participate by contributing books in good condition and helping us make a meaningful impact in our community.
