MESSAGE FROM GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT

Semester 2 Course Change Requests:

Students requesting to make changes for semester 2 must contact their alpha Guidance counsellor (in-person or via email), prior to the start of Semester 2 (no later than Friday, January 30).  Changes to semester 2 timetables during the first week of semester 2 will only be processed for students who were unsuccessful in a semester 1 course.

Final semester 2 timetables will be available to students via Teach Assist on Sunday, February 1, 2026.

Please note, students who have already been added to a wait list will only be contacted if space is available in the course and they are next on the list.

Course Selection Information:

Beginning Monday, February 2 to Friday, February 27, the Guidance office will be open to walk-ins only to support all students with course selection.  A Guidance pop-up station will also be available in the cafeteria during the lunch periods (periods 3 and 4). Course selection submissions will be completed through myPathway Planner and will open for submissions on Thursday, February 12 at 9am and will close on Friday, February 20, 4pm.

This is NOT a first come, first served. Course requests will only be processed once course selection closes. Information regarding the course selection process will be shared with students during the grade assemblies taking place on at the start of semester 2.

Students are encouraged to speak with departments if they require more information about courses. A schedule for meeting department representatives will be shared with students during the grade assemblies.

Please note, graduating students are required to submit the ‘Not Returning’ and Exit Survey in myPathway Planner.  This is now open for Grade 12 graduating students.

SHOWTIME PRENSENTS… NEWSIES 2026

Newsies Stage

Congratulations on an unforgettable production of Disney’s Newsies!
What unfolded on the Flato Markham Theatre stage from January 8–10 was nothing short of remarkable: a vibrant, high‑energy, deeply moving celebration of artistry, grit, and collaboration. From the first read‑through to the final bow, this community showed what it truly means to “Seize the Day.”

Every member of this production—our cast, crew, pit orchestra, designers, builders, marketing teams, and countless supporting hands—brought heart, discipline, and creativity to resurrect 1899 New York and share its message of solidarity and courage. You filled every rehearsal space, from hallways to cafeterias, with choreography, harmony, laughter, and determination. You turned challenges into opportunities, setbacks into momentum, and hard work into magic.

To the families and friends who drove students from late-Thursday rehearsals, picked up costumes from Hamilton, went on chair seeking missions, reviewed lines, and cheered from the audience: thank you for believing so fiercely in your young artists. Your support is the foundation on which productions like this are built.

To our UHS staff, administration, Mr. Ionesco’s and Ms. Younis’ marketing classes, set builders, caretakers, and volunteers—your behind-the-scenes work ensured that the world of Newsies was immersive, polished, and full of life. Thank you for every meeting, email, brainstorm, and moment spent uplifting our students.

To Ms. Cheung’s class, whose illustrations, animations, scaffolding sketches, and projection work added depth and authenticity to the world onstage—your artistry made this show richer and more imaginative.

With deep gratitude to our sponsors and supporters

This production was made possible in part through the generosity of our sponsors and donors. We extend our sincere congratulations and thanks to:

To the Pit Orchestra, whose live music brought energy to every moment—you lifted the production to new heights.

To our creative team (Ms. Fong, Ms. Bettio, and Laz), who guided this process with passion and vision, and to every student who performed, danced, sang, built, painted, designed, stitched, cued, tuned, researched, and problem‑solved—thank you for leading with artistry, resilience, and joy.

And to the audiences who filled the theatre with applause, encouragement, and warmth: thank you for celebrating the work of young artists.

Special Thank you to:

KICKS Dance Studio – Program Sponsor
The Trentadue Torres Group (RE/MAX All-Stars Realty Inc.) – Supporting Actor Sponsor
Richard and Jennifer Hayward
Anonymous Donor
Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation — District 16 “Excellence in Education” Grant

Your support provided essential resources that helped bring this enormous show to life, and we are profoundly grateful.

Newsies teaches us about the power of young people raising their voices, standing together, and creating change. This cast and crew embodied that message. You showed that when we collaborate, trust one another, and dare to dream boldly—remarkable things happen.

Congratulations to all on a triumphant production. You carried the banner with pride.

With admiration and gratitude,
The Creative Team
